WE ARE ALLIES

What creates real, fundamental change in a culture and country that has been plagued by racism since its inception? Racism is learned early on so it’s about changing our psyche around racism. In order to unlearn it, people should start by recognizing their own implicit biases and to take the responsibility of learning into their own hands. Then, true Allyship through action and systemic change can start to occur.

WE ARE ALLIES is a passion project and website designed to be an easy-to-digest resource and toolkit to facilitate learning around both bias and how to be a good, productive Ally against racism. This site is meant to be a long-lasting tool for allies of Black Lives Matter and has evolved to include a blog and monthly newsletter.

For the design approach, two considerations were made. I created custom illustrations for each section, rather using photography, as I wanted to keep the site friendly and make sure that people coming to the site who are at the start of their Allyship journey felt welcomed. Secondly, I took a feminine approach to the color palette and style. Psychologically, while both men and women are great at coming up with solutions, women are 64% more likely to sympathize and therefore actually take action, so I wanted to appeal to a more feminine demographic as my initial audience.

The site received 800 views in the first 2 weeks of launch and I’ve received countless shares, comments, and thank you’s, which makes it all worth it!
